In contrast to the emotion of happiness, Christian Joy, as a gift and a fruit of the Holy Spirit, is always available and is based on our acceptance of a close relationship with Christ. Since Lent is a season of focus on renewal in Christ, Joy should indeed be a characteristic of Lent, as is evidenced by the Rule of St. Benedict.
